This 6 month old bloodhound puppy was hit by a car. Her upper jaw was broken completely and her lower jaw was broken in 3 places. The problem was to maintain ridgity in the upper jaw, while allowing the lower jaw to move. We used a KE on the jaw, with some additional modifications.

An endotracheal tube was placed to protect the airway and allow controlled flow of gas and monitoring.Other monitors were placed to keep track of heart rate, oxygenation and blood pressure.

Drs Whitney and Hayes often work closely together to solve some of these complex surgical problems.

"Jaws" slept peacefully through the entire procedure. When she woke up, she was delighted to eat and drink, although her family will have to hand feed her for up to two months because she has to wear an E-collar to keep her from tearing the KE off.
